1/31/2022 0 Comments What is Coaching?Coaching is a method that will always be sought after. Since its inception in the 1980s, it has continued to evolve, expand and refine as a methodology. The world of coaching is eternally evolving and growing. Coaching has been defined in various ways throughout the years, and before I try to formulate my own understanding of it, it will be appropriate to quote the definitions of some of the established coaching institutions around the world. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.” As per the International Association of Coaching Institutes, coaching is “essentially an interactive, results-oriented, enlightening process that leads to change. Coaching gives everyone the opportunity to live a happier, healthier and calmer life, while maximizing their personal and professional potential.” And perhaps the best definition of coaching, in my opinion, comes from the authors of ‘Co-Active coaching’, Karen Kimsey-House and Henry Kimsey-House: "Coaching is not about solving problems, although problems will be solved. It's not so much about improving performance, achieving goals or achieving results, although all of this will certainly happen over time in an effective coaching relationship. Coaching is mainly used for discovery, awareness and choice. It's a way to effectively empower people to find their own answers, encouraging and supporting them along the way as they continue to make important, life-giving and life-changing choices. " Although the word "coaching" initially comes from the world of sports, today it is an independent profession that is clearly distinguished from mentoring, counseling, therapy, and training. Coaching helps a person achieve a goal, complete a task, overcome a problem of any nature, develop a new skill, become a better version of himself, and generally achieve a better life. Coaching is a partnership between a client and a coach, in which the two together provoke the thinking and creativity of the client so that he can make the right decision in managing his life. Coaching can indeed be defined in many ways, and when being asked to explain what coaching is, I usually answer with: Coaching helps us realize that everything we need to be successful and happy is within ourselves, and that we already have everything we need to lead a happy, healthy and satisfying life. If you have reached a place in life where you recognize the need of overcoming what stands in the way of your success, maximizing your potential and thus achieving your goals and making your dreams come true – then you may consider the idea of working with a life coach.
